KITA hosted a business luncheon with Maryland governorLawrence J. Hogan, Jr.
The Korea International Trade Association (Chairman: Christopher Koo) invited Maryland Governor Lawrence J. Hogan, Jr. to a business luncheon held on September 19th at COEX Intercontinental Seoul in Samseong-dong. This event was attended by representatives from Korean exporting companies, who had opportunities to engage in dialogue with the governor.
Chairman Koo remarked, “Korea and the U.S. are working closely together to establish a sustainable global supply chain in the field of cutting-edge industries, including semiconductors, rechargeable battery and biotechnology industries.” The Chairman also added, “It is my wish to see robust cooperation between Korea and Maryland as the state boasts competitiveness in biotechnology and aerospace industries.”
Governor Hogan remarked, “I am very proud of the strong foundation of cooperation between Maryland and Korea” and highlighted, “Korea contributed to Maryland by providing a wide array of opportunities in the field of corporate collaboration, academia and culture across-the-board.” The governor also mentioned, “KITA has been a wonderful partner of the Maryland government for the past eight years and wish the bilateral cooperation to continue into the future.”
The business luncheon was attended by representatives of Korean companies focusing on the exporting business to the U.S., including Exiqon, SeAH Steel Corporation, BioSmart Co., Genesis BBQ and LabGenomics. They had an opportunity to discuss issues on the impact resulting from the implementation of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and ways to expand economic cooperation with Maryland.
Hyeon-cheol Kim, the Head of the International Affairs Group mentioned, “KITA is scheduled to meet members of the U.S. Congress and officials from state governments in early October and plans to discuss the impact triggered by the implementation of IRA and possible avenues to expand highly skilled work visa quota for Korean professionals.”
Maintaining cooperative relations between KITA and Maryland is not new. The two sides have engaged in cooperative relations since 2015, when KITA organized a business meeting between Governor Hogan and relevant stakeholders during his visit to Korea. A year later in 2016, a trade mission was dispatched to the U.S., and Governor Hogan’s spouse, Ms. Yumi Hogan, hosted a reception to welcome the delegation.
