The Korean government has committed to joint research and investment in nine projects regarding the advanced industries with Israel such as bio, robotics and mobility. As a result, joint R&D in silver care robots, AI self-driving platforms, etc. worth USD 176 million will be implemented.
On June 7, the Korea Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy revealed that it had held a ‘Korea-Israel Business Seminar’, in which Minister Lee Chang-Yang of Trade, Industry and Energy, and Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen, as well as businessmen from both countries totaling about 100 persons attended.
On this occasion, the Korea and Israeli governments each established one letter of intent, two contracts, and six MOUs.
Notably, Korea’s Cure Ceraptuics and Israel’s Adva Biotechnology have decided to establish a factory for mass production of cell therapy based on the results of the joint R&D pursued through the Korea-Israel Industrial Technology R&D Fund.
Since 2001, Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and Israel Innovation Authority have formed a cumulative Industrial Technology R&D Fund amounting to USD 77 million, and have pursued technological cooperation for joint R&D in 196 projects among industry, academia and research.
In addition, SK Telecom established an agreement with Israel’s Intuition Robotics to launch joint R&D of silver care robots. Going forward, R&D will be pursued for silver care social robot hardware or speech recognition engines and services.
Through this, robotics, smart mobility and other areas that require mid to long term research will be selected as part of a lighthouse program for focused research.
On the other hand, other than technological cooperation in new industries, the Korea Development Institute also established an MOU with the Finance Ministry of Israel for cooperation in the new establishment of bilateral strategic Economic Dialogue. In addition, three MOUs were established in trade and investment.
“For advanced technology development and improvement of industrial competitiveness to the highest of standards, we shall establish a comprehensive strategy for global technological cooperation, and expand the scale of technological cooperation with Israel, which is a powerhouse of original technology…Increased cooperation with global advanced research institutes, formation of a R&D ecosystem, de-regulation, etc. shall also be pursued,” said Minister Lee.
