The Korea Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has selected 8 projects in Ukraine, Indonesia, Egypt, etc. as the 2023 K-City Network Project, which is being pursued in order to form smart cities around the world and expand international cooperation.

According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, on June 22, this year’s K-City network project is classified into categories of 1) plan establishment, and 2) overseas demonstration. An international competition was implemented from April, with a total of 18 countries submitting 30 projects.

The plan establishment category involves projects for which applications are received from foreign cities, and support is provided regarding the establishment of a basic plan regarding smart city development. Four projects were selected ? those that were applied from Uman, Ukraine; new capital of Indonesia; Badr, Egypt; and Aghdam, Azerbaijan.

In the case of Uman, Ukraine, the plan is to establish a smart city master plan in areas such as transportation, infrastructure, and housing for post-war reconstruction, and to provide assistance so that the project can be pursued in a systematic manner.

Moreover, in the case of the new capital of Indonesia, Korea plans to provide support for a pre-feasibility study for the building of a smart city control center, to verify the project value, and provide a bridgehead for entry of Korean companies into the smart city project of the new capital.

In the case of the overseas demonstration category, this project provides assistance so that the smart city technology and projects, etc. of Korean companies can be demonstrated in overseas cities. This year, four applications were selected - Rangpur, Bangladesh; Hai Phong, Vietnam; Sakarya, Turkey; and Banyumas, Indonesia.

Gil Byung-Woo, City Policy Officer at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, said "Many countries and cities overseas are showing increased interest in Korea’s smart cities. The rate of participation in international competitions held by Korea is growing…We shall provide active support so that the outstanding smart city technology of Korean companies can be exported overseas through this project.”

“Through the World Smart City EXPO that will be held in September, we plan to promote the smart city technology of Korea and support networking of Korean companies,” he added.
