Daily Yomiuri: “To be Discussed together with

the Resumption of ‘Shuttle Diplomacy’ at the Summit Meeting”

 

 

On March 16, at the Tokyo Summit Meeting, Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio shall confirm the plan for establishing a discussion group for dialogue on Korea-Japan economy and security, for the purpose of strengthening the semiconductor supply network, reported the Daily Yomiuri. According to the report, the heads of the two countries are planning to establish a new dialogue on economy and security in which only the two countries participate, apart from the talks on economy and security among Korea-U.S.-Japan

 

The Korea-U.S.-Japan talks on economy and security are a discussion group agreed upon at the Summit among the three nations held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia in November of last year. Its first meeting was held on the 27^th of February in Honolulu, U.S.A. At this meeting, discussions underwent on expanded cooperation and exchange of professional manpower in new and core technology areas such as quantum, bio, and space; the stabilization of supply networks for semiconductors, batteries, and core minerals; technology protection; data movement and protection; and response to weaponization of economic interdependence

 

In regard to Korea-Japan dialogue on economy and security, the Yomiuri Daily noted, “Reducing dependence on China for semiconductors and mineral resources, and acquiring superiority in advanced technology are becoming important tasks for the major countries.”At an interview reported by the major daily newspapers of Japan on this day, President Yoon Suk Yeol of Korea said, “We expect material cooperation among countries such as Korea, U.S., Japan and Taiwan that lead the semiconductor industry will contribute to stabilizing the global cooperative network,” and emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation in economic matters.

 

“With use of the strengths of each country within the semiconductor supply network, by identifying areas for cooperation in which countries could complement one another, we shall be able to create a synergy effect,” added President Yoon.  At the summit meeting on this day, President Yoon and Prime Minister Kishida reaffirmed the plan to resume “shuttle diplomacy” in which each side visits the other on a regular basis.

 

In addition, when President Yoon explains the solutions for resolving the issue of compensating victims of forced labor during the Japanese Colonial Period, Prime Minister Kishida is to express his willingness to support them. “After the two countries make advancements in coming close to a solution on the biggest issue, which is that of “forced labor”, they shall pursue normalization of relations in many areas, such as politics, economy and culture,” noted the Yoimuri Daily.
